Joe Guy’s work can be described as “structural paintings”. Wooden grids are hand-constructed and then wrapped with multiple layers of stretched paper. Graphite is applied and worked on the surface which is burnished and waxed to reveal the visual image---seemingly empty of content. To evoke the “presence of Emptiness” in the image is this artist’s highest goal.
