DESERTS, SEAS, AND JOURNEYS

Group f.8: Deserts, Seas, and Journeys

Group f.8: Deserts, Seas, and Journeys, an exhibition of new and recent photographic works by Fort Worth's Group f.8 collective, will be on display June 22-August 3 at William Campbell Contemporary Art.

An opening reception will be held Saturday, June 22, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Initially formed by noted Fort Worth artist Christopher Blay in 2000, Group f.8 included various photographers during its five-year incarnation. But it is the group's founding members, Julie Almendral, Elizabeth Bowie, Tanya Habjoqua, James Johnston, Loli Kantor, and Nick Prendergast, who, along with Blay, have reunited for this special one-time event.

Works in the exhibition visually delineate the path that each artist has taken since the group last exhibited together eleven years ago. Pieces

include both color and black-and-white photographs, in addition to a multimedia projection by James Johnston. Subject matter ranges from Johnston's desert scenery, to Blay's more abstracted "antigraphs" - latent images derived from expired Polaroid film.

Named for a common camera lens aperture setting, Group f.8 began as an avenue to define photography and what the image itself was about. The group's founding members studied locally under such notable photographers as Dornith Doherty, Peter Feresten, Richard Doherty, and Kenda North. Julie Almendral and Elizabeth Bowie studied photography at the University of the South (Sewanee), in Tennessee.

Group f.8 mounted its inaugural exhibition in 2000 at the now defunct Studio 4, a small artist-run studio in Fort Worth's Cultural District. The group continued to exhibit together for the next two years, then parted ways in 2002. Several f.8 iterations materialized during the next four years, and included Brian Driscoll, Jenny Garcia, Christopher Jones, Elizabeth Mellott, Tuba Oztekin-Koymens, Kerri Sutterfield, and Angilee Wilkerson. The collective disbanded for good in 2005.
